Free movement of scientists and visa restrictions affecting scientific exchange

This project addresses the challenges and potential policy solutions related to freedom of movement among scientists worldwide. It aims to identify obstacles, particularly visa restrictions, that hinder scientific exchange across national borders, and, by collecting best practices worldwide, to propose practical interventions that science bodies, institutions and eventually policymakers can adopt in the face of worsening geopolitical tensions and increased travel restrictions.
This project examines two specific aspects related to freedom of movement among scientists:

Mobility: This describes long-term international movement of scientists, such as relocating to another country for scientific training or to take up academic positions.

Circulation: This is short-term international movement, such as traveling to attend conferences, workshops, or collaborative meetings.
Scientific Responsibility and its Relationship with Scientific Freedom

Role: project team member
Contributing to Future Sciences and across the ISCs portfolio, this project examines how concepts and institutional arrangements of scientific responsibility have evolved, and how they interact with scientific freedom in the 21st century. It addresses gaps in current responsible research systems and explores how responsibilities can be supported and, where necessary, enforced without unjustifiably constraining scientific freedom.
